Google and Epic Games entered into a discreet $800 million agreement, ‘aiding Google in promoting Android.’
The ongoing court proceedings demonstrate that Google and Epic Games reached a secret agreement which includes three elements: Android, Unreal Engine, and their unspecified product development work.
The Verge reports that, during the long-running antitrust court battle, California District Judge James Donato is questioning whether or not Epic Games and Google are settling the case over a previously-unannounced partnership. The court revealed that the deal between the two companies involves “joint product development, joint marketing commitment, [and] joint partnerships,” around Unreal Engine, Fortnite, and Android.
Judge Donato further indicated that Epic would be “helping Google market Android” where Google would be “using Epic’s core technology,” and expressed concerns that this may have led to Epic softening its demands, leading to a settlement that was first announced in November and, finally, puts an end to the long-running legal battle between the two companies, assuming Judge Donato finalizes it.
The settlement hearing today revealed that both companies formed a partnership which Epic confirmed as “new business between Epic and Google.”
Tim Sweeney, who serves as the CEO of Epic, described the agreement as connected to the metaverse.
Epic's technology enables multiple companies within Google's operational space to develop their products, which means Google has extended its rights to use Unreal Engine despite my violation of confidential information.
The judge revealed that the deal will cost Epic $800 million to Google during the upcoming six-year period. The two companies have hidden their current project details from public knowledge, but Sweeney revealed that Google and Epic are developing their respective product lines which they plan to combine for future work.
The current situation represents an unexpected outcome because nobody expected any kind of agreement to happen after the extensive legal battles which lasted for several years. What do you think it might be?
